Sarah DeArmond,
is a dedicated advocate for the wrongfully convicted, driven by a mission to amplify the voices of those who have been silenced behind bars. Her journey into advocacy began in 2020 when she became deeply involved with the Black Lives Matter movement. It was through this activism that she was introduced to the case of Pervis Payne, sparking her commitment to fighting for justice.
Sarah's passion for advocating for the wrongfully convicted only grew stronger with each case she encountered. From Brandan Bernard to Dustin Higgs and Billie Allen, she tirelessly worked to shed light on their stories, using her platform on social media to mobilize support and demand action.
The pivotal moment that solidified Sarah's mission occurred when she was contacted by Terrance, whose father, Timothy McGruder, was wrongfully convicted. This encounter prompted Sarah to found her nonprofit organization, Voiceless Behind Bars, in November 2021. Inspired by the simple desire of Timothy McGruder to be heard, Sarah established Voiceless Behind Bars to provide support and financial assistance to those who have been unjustly imprisoned.
Through her nonprofit, Sarah raises funds through tax-deductible donations to help cover the legal fees of wrongfully convicted individuals. Despite the challenges of running a small organization, Sarah remains committed to her cause, advocating for one person at a time while striving to expand her reach in the future.
Sarah's resilience in the face of adversity is evident in her unwavering dedication to her mission. Despite encountering skepticism and criticism, particularly regarding the stigma surrounding incarcerated individuals, Sarah continues to press forward, undeterred by naysayers.
In 2022, Sarah and her husband took a significant step forward by formalizing Voiceless Behind Bars through LegalZoom, marking a milestone in her journey as an advocate. With her trademarked organization, Sarah is poised to make an even greater impact in the fight for justice.
